  • Use an honorific (i.e. Dr, Prof, Mr, Ms) for faculty, staff, and other professionals
    • Always for a one-time email
    • For an ongoing familiar relationship you can ask what they prefer
    • Being a bit more formal than needed is much better than possibly insulting someone on accident
  • Be short and to the point
  • Questions with a "?" get a reply
  • Give them time to reply…at a day or 2 unless they say otherwise

  • Required elements:
    • useful subject line (include course and section for class email like "PSU 016 sec 550")
      • Teaching is only about 1/3 of a Professor's job, so this will speed up the reply
    • identifiers (part of a regular signature?)
      • psu id (e.g. mdb268)
      • student number (e.g. 9-5720-9483)
  • Suggested elements:
    • pay a little attention to spelling and grammar
    • questions with a "?" get a reply

  • If you use gmail or some other email client, link it to your abc123@psu.edu email so that you can SEND replies from psu.edu email server
  • Make sure you know communication preferences for faculty
    • direct email
    • Canvas/Angel mail feature
    • something else
